Curious families learning about Alberta's aquatic invertebrates at The Minnow

On May 31, 2025, the Aquatic Biosphere was invited to the Alberta Conservation Association's Kids Can Catch event in Fort Saskatchewan. Hundreds of eager families attended to try the Lions Pond, fishing rods in tow.

No stranger to Lions Pond, The Minnow was in attendance to the thrill of onlookers curious about what's in Alberta's water.

The Minnow showcased a diverse local sampling of aquatic life. Water tigers, scuds, snails, and diving beetles scurried about in the tanks. Mysterious larvae danced about, and leeches clung to the corners.

Visitors were treated to the molt of a water tiger, showing the impressive mandibles and feathery limbs they use to pose in the water, hunting for prey.

All told, The Minnow hosted over twenty-five visitors per hour. Thrilled onlookers took in the story of their water and what aquatic invertebrates can teach us about the local fish populations.
